Sometimes, when writing with a woman in an online dating platform, you suspect that she might be a dating scammer. Same for guys.
Maybe he or she fit an idea of what you have what these scammers look like. It used to be easy to spot them on Tinder, for example – typically young Asian women which were within a 4 km radius of you. With stories of being “away and will return next month”. Very transparent …
Another telltale sign might be very rapid responses, and them being online at the same time as you – all the time apparently. Usually women (I can’t vouch for men, but I guess them as well!) answer with delays of many days.
I’ve come up with an idea how to kill these conversations quickly, while keeping the normal conversations going. I just tried it, and the chat was ended by the (I assume scammer).
Online dating scammer detection tool
(Prelude: I suspect a scam, and tease her about meeting – she says that she prefers to get to know the person first – I say OK, no rush)
Me: (after flirting for a bit) What was your weirdest date so far?
Her: Streetwise, but could have been more exotic. What about yours?
Me: (after a break) It wasn’t a date, actually. It was this online dating conversation – the woman mentioned something about dropping her phone. She said she was only able to text, and couldn’t call.
Her: Oh, sorry to hear that. How are you by the way?
(NB asking a second time “How are you?” in a short timeframe – give away of someone working huge numbers of chats at the same time, possibly even several people collaborating, or an AI handling this)
Me: I figured out quickly that it was a dating scam, of course. Luckily, there’s many real women here which I can get to know. Did you ever experience something like this?
I was unmatched, as I had expected.
Why does this work?
Because scammers are risking to lose their accounts, and wasting their time. By giving this signal (hey, I am aware of dating scams, and figure them out quickly), but wrapped in a story, I give scammers the hint that it’s a waste of time talking to me.
My time is saved.
In the case of a real woman, I think she would engage further, at least for some additional messages, maybe comment about some dating scams which happened to her.
